How to slow down the world’s fastest-shrinking country

BBC Sept. 2019

As natives of the poorest member of the European Union, Bulgarians have been leaving their homes in droves, contributing to the world’s fastest population decline.

Bulgaria’s population was around 9 million at the end of the 1980s, but it fell to fewer than 7 million in 2018 and is expected to fall below 6 million in 50 years.

Low birth rates are the biggest factor for such a steep decline. But what sets Bulgaria apart from other declining European countries is its massive outbound migration.
